.AU domain names are the new official domain name for Australia and are available to purchase now. So how does it work?

Can I Purchase Them Now?

If you own a .com.au or .net.au domain name you can secure the same domain name within a .au now. In order to do so, you’ll need to verify ownership of the .com.au or .net.au domain name (particularly if you are purchasing it through a different registrar.)

If you’re looking to purchase a .au domain name and don’t currently own the .com.au or .net.au version, you’ll need to wait until September 2022. This was put in place in order to give businesses and individuals sufficient time to secure their rightful domain name, and prevent your competitors from snapping them up.

What Should I Do With the .AU Version?

Time will tell whether or not Google favours .au domain names over .com.au versions. In the meantime, we suggest that you keep your .com.au domain name as the default and redirect the .au version. Most domain registrars will set this up for no charge.
